Have you ever gone to help someone move only to get there and realize they are nowhere near ready for your help? Clothes still in drawers, food still in the fridge, and dishes still in the cupboards can make for a pretty frustrating moving day. While you may have to be patient with whomever you are helping move, when you’ve hired residential movers, they may not be so patient. Packing is just one of the many things you’ll need to take care of, but the list is extensive of things to do before the residential movers show up. We’ve provided a checklist for you:
-Provide a preliminary list of what will be moved by the residential movers. Any extra items added on moving day could cost you a lot.
-Be sure to know exactly what is in your contract and what services the movers offer. You may be able to find a company that will pack your things too!
-Start reducing the amount of stuff you will be taking. Consider a yard sale or website such as Craigslist to get rid of unwanted or spare things.
-Donate the stuff you can’t sell to limit the amount the residential movers will need to deal with.
-Start using up your perishables. Even if you aren’t moving very far, it’s much easier to travel with an empty fridge than trying to transport food items.
-Provide the residential movers with an exact list. A few days before the big move, provide the residential movers with an exact list of the things they will be responsible for.
-Confirm any additional stops, drop-offs or pick-ups the residential movers will need to make.
-Give the residential movers your exact information. They will need exact drop off times and locations. Don’t forget to give them specifics, such as directions if the house is hard to find, or combinations if it’s a gated community or apartment complex.
-Plan to stay on the premises the day of the move- it is your responsibility to make sure all your items end up on the truck.
-Plan to be on site as your stuff is unloaded at your new place. If you can’t be there, be sure to have someone you trust waiting.
-Provide the residential movers with a layout of your new place and where you would like things placed. It will save a lot of time on move-in day if they have an idea of where things are going.
